Springing into a new season

As the Spring season draws closer, it is almost time for us to say our goodbyes to the Winter season and welcome the warmth and beauty of Spring Season 2011. This Spring season holds a vast array of different shows, many of them I will be watching myself. 25 to be exact. So here are my impressions of what I will be watching this Spring 2011.

Nichijou (Everyday Life)

Nichijou is a school life show that is the opposite of what you would expect out of ordinary school life. In this show you may encounter the principal wrestling a deer or a robot’s arm hide a rollcake. But it will also have the normal stories, like building a card castle or worrying about that test you didn’t study for. This show, at first, didn’t really spark my attention. That is until I noticed the director of the show. The one and only Tatsuya Ishihara, the man behind Clannad and Clannad After Story, Kanon (2006), and Air. After finding this out, I am now extremely excited to watch this show.

Anticipation: Extremely High

Sket Dance

A club called “Campus Support Group” or “Sket-Dan” is devoted to solving any problem brought on by the staff or student body for the general improvement of campus life. But due to lack of assignments and the reputation of the “group of handymen”, the club is treated with widespread contempt and is only comprised of three members. Kind of reminds me of what Gintama does. And I did not like Gintama. Maybe this will be different. We will have to see.

Anticipation: Moderate

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

The Japanese government is saved from a financial crisis by the Sovereign Wealth Fund. Life however has not improved. Our main character Kimimaro is living with his grandmother and just wants to live a normal life. One day a man offers him a large sum only if he can pay it back. From then on his life is changed and he finds himself drawn into “The Financial District”.  This show sounds really interesting. Haven’t watched a lot of shows dealing with money and the economy. And this show is taking a interesting take on it. Count me interested.

Anticipation: High

Deadman Wonderland

Ganta Igarashi is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. So he is sent to Deadman Wonderland: a prison/amusement park where the prisoners are there to entertain the audience. While trapped in Deadman Wonderland, Ganta tries to prove his innocence. Ever since this show was announced, Ven has been hyping the shit out of it because of how good the manga is. And his hype may match how good this show will be. I am definitely interested in seeing how this show turns out.

Anticipation: High

Electromagnetic Wave Woman & Adolescent Man

Niwa Makoto lives with his aunt where he meets his cousin of the same age, Touwa Erio. Erio walks around with a futon mattress on her upper body and is a self-proclaimed alien. She has been missing for half a year, has no idea why she had gone missing, and was found floating in the sea. I’m looking forward to this show. Because its Shaft, and this show looks all Shafted up. So yea, this looks to be good.

Anticipation: High

A group of friends have customized their microwave to send text messages to the past. An organization called SERN has been experimenting with time travel and is now trying to track them down. The characters are now on the run and trying to avoid capture. Everyone I have talked to is extremely excited for this show. Honestly, I’m not seeing what they are seeing. But I’m going to give it a try anyways.

Anticipation: Moderately-low

You’re Being Summoned, Azazel-san

Akutabe is a detective who summons demons to solve his cases. One day he summons a demon named Azazel who is treated harshly by Akutabe and his assistant, Rinko. Looks goofy and possibly humorous. Not really expecting much out of this show.

Anticipation: Moderately-Low

Girl becomes manager of her high school baseball team. Buys a book called “Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices”. She uses the lessons in that book to rally her team to victory. Baseball anime. Possible cute girls. Who knows how this might be.

Anticipation: Moderately-low

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

Six childhood friends grow apart from each other in high school. One of them is Jintan, now a shut-in, who receives a request to fulfill one of his friends wishes. In order to do so, he must reunite his old friends. I have always enjoyed slice-of-life shows, and this looks to be a good one at that. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Anticipation: Moderately-high

Appleseed XIII

Takes place in the 22nd century after the non-nuclear Third World War decimates the Earth. Organizations like “Sacred Republique of of Mumna” and “Poseidon” are established during the aftermath. Never did watch the old Appleseed movies, so I’m interested in watching the anime series to see what the story is like.

Anticipation: Moderate

Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)

Rin Okumura was raised by a famous exorcist Father Fujimoto. After an argument with him, Rin discovers that he is the son of Satan. Rin decides to join the True Cross Academy to become an exorcist and defeat demons. At first, I wasn’t too into this show and wasn’t even going to watch it. But then I found out that King was even going to watch this. So if King is going to watch it, it must be good.

Anticipation: Moderate

Many delicious foods are found in the most dangerous of places. And it is up to Gourmet Food Providers to hunt them down. Toriko is one of these, and is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Gourmet Food Providers because of his immense appetite. A shounen anime that revolves around food? This could be interesting

Anticipation: Moderately-high

Tiger & Bunny

Schternbilt City is home to people called “Next,” who use their special abilities to protect the people as superheroes. These heroes solve cases and save lives so they can wear sponsor logos or acquire “hero points.” Their activities are documented on the popular program “Hero TV,” which picks the “King of Heroes” in a yearly ranking. The veteran hero Wild Tiger has always preferred to work alone, but now he’s been assigned the rookie Barnaby Brooks Jr., who has a different perspective on being a superhero. This sounds a bit odd, but Sunrise has made some good shows so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Anticipation: Moderate

The World God Only Knows 2

Sequel to the first season of The World God Only Knows, Keima Katsuragi accepts a contract to “capture” girls, thinking it means the 2D girls he knows in his video games. What it really means is capturing spirits that have trapped themselves in girls hearts and he is to go around and release those spirits with the help of Elsea, a demon from Hell. I enjoyed the first season of this so I’m looking forward to more Keima knowledge and humor from Elsea.

Anticipation: Moderately-high

Hanasaku Iroha

Matsumae Ohana, a 16 year old girl, moves our of Tokyo and starts working in a hot spring hotel. She has not yet decided on her future. The show also features other teenagers in the same situation. Little is out about this show right now so I don’t know what to expect. I could be good, or it could be horrible. We will just have to find out.

Anticipation: Moderately- low

Maria Holic Alive

Sequel to the first season Maria Holic. Kanako Miyamae decides to attend an all-girls school in hopes of searching for a girlfriend. She comes to find out that her attractive roommate, Maria Shidou, is actually a boy in drag. Since Kanako has found out about his secret, Maria makes her life a living hell in order to keep her from revealing his secret. All I have to say about this is FUCK YEAH!!!!!! I’m so ready for some more Maria Holic. This show was the reason I looked so forward to the Spring season at the start of the year. BRING IT ON SHAFT!!!!

Anticipation: HIGH AS A FUCKING KITE!!

Xebec. Show about tennis. Moments of ecchi sprinkled around. Not really seeing much out of this.

Anticipation: Low

Aria the Scarlet Ammo

The story centers around Tokyo Butei High School, a school that trains armed detectives, “Butei”, to use weapons. Kinji Tooyama is a 2nd year with a special ability, but hides this in order to maintain a normal life. This all changes when he gets caught up in a bombing on his way to school and encounters H. Aria Kanzaki, the most powerful S-Rank Butei in Assault Studies. I was looking forward to watching this because it is being done by J.C. Staff, the same studio who did Toradora, and the fact that it looks like a pretty cool show. That was until I saw who was directing the show; Takashi Watanabe, the same person who is directing one of the worst shows this Winter season, Freezing. So my anticipation for this show has dropped.

Anticipation: Moderately-low

A Channel

Basically this show is about 4 girls in high school. Reminds me a lot of what Lucky Star is, which I don’t care too much for. So I’m not expecting too much out of this show

Anticipation: Low

Lotte’s Toy

Astarotte Ygvar is a succubus who has just turned 10. In order for her to maintain her body and beautiful appearance, she must have a male harem, and eat a substance from which all males have. They call this substance Sauzfryma, or semen. According to Ven, there is no semen eating or the like in this series and he even says that the manga is good. So I’m looking forward to how this show will turn out.

Anticipation: Moderate

Hen Zemi (Abnormal Physiology Seminar)

Pretty much this show is about Matsutaka Nanako who is a normal university student and joins the Abnormal Physiology seminar. From what I’ve heard, this show is pretty perverse with a lot of sex talk and what not. I’m interested to see how this show does with this whole Youth Ordinance Bill floating around.

Anticipation: Moderate

Health & Physical Education for 30 Year Olds

Apparently there is a book out there in Japan that teaches 30 year old men how to date and fuck women. And now its getting an anime. Interesting.

Anticipation: Low

Dog Days

Republic of Biscotti faces a predicament by the invasion of Galette Leo Knights. In order to save the country, Princess Milchore summons a “hero” from the outer world. Shinku, a junior high school boy living in the Earth, is chosen as the hero. Again, another show this season I’m not expecting much out of. We’ll see how it goes

Anticipation: Low

Dororon Enma-kun

Remake of a 70’s anime about Tsutomu, a boy who goes to Yokai Elementary School,  who is suddenly assaulted by monsters from Hell who have come to the human world to find human spirits. Those who save him from the monsters are Enma-kun, the son of Enma, Yukiko, a snow woman, and Kapaeru. They are members of Monster Patrol that are sent to the human world to arrest monsters. This show looks kinda kiddy. It looks like it could be humorous and I’m assuming its good if its getting a remake.

Anticipation: Moderate

Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal

What really is there to say? It’s Yu-Gi-Oh. Its about adults playing children’s card games. Actually this time around its a 13 year old kid. But I’m sure there will be many adults playing. I can honestly say that I’m pretty excited to watch this. I haven’t watched a Yu-Gi-Oh show in quite a long time, so I’m looking forward to this.

Anticipation: Moderately-high

And there you have it kids. Every single show I will be watching this Spring season. And this Spring season looks to have some potential to be good. There are a lot of different shows to boot, so there is bound to be one in the bunch that will be good. I’m really looking forward to this upcoming season so here’s to hoping it’s as good as last spring (even though I didn’t watch last Spring’s season).

I also partake in video games, Magic: The Gathering, and sports (primarily American Football). I started writing back in 2011 when my friends over at Anime Afterlife Podcast decided to bring me on as a writer and podcast host. But once things started to fall apart there, I was brought on as a writer for Desu Ex Machina. But my time there ended and I decided to take a break from blogging to not only relax from blogging for a while, but to also sort out my personal life as well. Now I'm getting the itch to write again, and so The Anime Kid was born.

  1. Damn, that’s a long list of shows. I’m still a bit surprised you have Yu-gi-oh on there. Maybe it’s just that I haven’t really grown up with Yugioh, that I don’t really see the appeal in that show. Or maybe I’m just a hater.

The Japanese dub is actually really good for Yu-Gi-Oh!, so I’m excited for Zexal as well. I watched some of 5Ds before the English dub came out, and before I got distracted and stopped watching, I felt the show was a bit more mature because of the voice work as opposed to the English dub.
